Backlink is a link between Website A and Website B, search engines like Google evaluate the quantity, quality, and relevance of backlinks for a web page in order to estimate how important the page is. They use backlink as one of the key parameter because backlink means one website trust the other website. High quality backlink can help you increase the website ranking position and position in Search Engine result (SEO). Essentially it means that other vouch for your content, so incase many site link to same page than Search engine can consider it as worth linking and therefore worth surfacing in (SERP).

Broadly there are two type of backlink Nofollow backlink and Dofollow back, basically they communicate with search engine. In case if Dofollow they leave value to communicate and in case of Nofollow do not pass any value.
